Book 2

The Asia Saving Challenge

The team returns for a tougher challenge across Tokyo, Shanghai and Phnom Penh. This SAVE pillar book teaches children the real discipline of saving, how compound growth works, and why patience matters more than any clever trick.

The Story

Tom, Sophia, Lucas and Mai return for a second challenge, older and more careful this time, but no less surprised by what's waiting for them. The budget is bigger — a thousand dollars — but so is the catch: two hundred dollars must be set aside as an untouchable reserve, no matter what happens, no matter how good the excuse.

Travelling through Tokyo, Shanghai and Phnom Penh, the team faces their hardest test yet: a genuinely tempting reason to break their own rule. Along the way, they watch real compound growth unfold in front of them, encounter inflation firsthand in a busy market, and discover a community savings group that runs on nothing but trust.

By the time a hidden slip of paper surfaces — four amounts, four currencies, and a date that shouldn't mean anything but somehow does — the four friends realise this was never just a competition about saving money. It's about learning what happens when you actually keep your word.

What Students Learn

  • Why protecting money is a genuine skill, not simply the absence of spending
  • How to resist a tempting shortcut, even when the reason feels good
  • The real mechanics of compound growth, seen in a live example
  • How inflation quietly changes what the same amount of money can buy
  • The difference between saving alone and saving together as a community

Key Financial Concepts

  • Reserves & emergency funds — money set aside on purpose, before it's needed
  • Compound growth — how a small amount grows faster than most people expect
  • Inflation — why prices don't stay the same, and what that means for saving
  • Delayed gratification — the discipline behind every genuinely good financial habit
  • Community savings groups — an introduction to saving as a shared, trust-based practice

The Companion Workbook

Student Workbook 2 uses the exact same $1,000 budget and untouchable $200 reserve from the novel, along with the real 2%-a-day compound growth example the characters watch unfold in Shanghai. Across ten units, students learn what actually separates saving from simply not spending, how compound growth accelerates over time, how inflation quietly erodes what money can buy, and why saving alongside a community can work differently to saving alone. The workbook closes with the Four Jars Challenge, where students design and commit to their own ongoing saving habit, directly inspired by the story's own ending.

Teacher Resources

Workbook 2 builds directly on the concepts introduced in Workbook 1, making it a natural next step for a returning class or reader. Each unit includes a Big Question, a real worked example drawn from the story, and a self-contained activity requiring no additional materials.

Use This In Your School

The Asia Saving Challenge pairs naturally with any classroom unit on budgeting, goal-setting, or personal finance basics. Teachers have used the reserve-fund storyline specifically to open real discussions about delayed gratification and financial discipline.
